Background: Judo experts from 14 countries travelled to Tbilisi in southern USSR recently for the sixth international Judo tournament to be held there.
Highlights of the early competition were the heavyweight bouts. The overall winner was Munich Olympic Champion in the 93 kg division, Shota Choshishvili, (USSR). His closest rival -- fellow countryman Vladimir Dutov -- was set to challenge the champion but was injured before the decisive bout.
Early in the competition Dutov showed his form with a convincing win over the Cuban Champion Jose Ibarez.
Although they faced stiff competition from Judo exponents from countries such as Canada, France, North Korea and Bulgaria, Soviet judoists won titles in all five classes.
