Background: Dr Mahmoud Fawzy, Egypt's most distinguished career diplomat, is believed to have been chosen as his country's next Prime Minister.
A Cairo newspaper reported today (Monday) that President Anwar Sadat had selected a highly respected national figure for the post.
President Sadat has not yet revealed the name but the choice is expected to be 70-year-old Dr Fawzy who has represented Egypt at the United Nations and has previously held the post of Foreign Minister.
Dr Fawzy is a fluent linguist and was educated in Britain and the United States as well as Egypt. Since the six-day war, President Nasser had held the post of Prime Minister, but President Sadat has indicated that he will appoint a Prime Minister rather than shoulder the burden of leadership by himself.
