  • Description

Following a three hour tour of Copenhagen, Emperor Hirohito of Japan, accompanied by the Empress Nagako, were entertained to lunch by King Frederik and Queen Ingrid of Denmark in Fredensborg Palace, just north of the city, on Tuesday (28 September).

The Emperor, the first reigning Japanese monarch to visit Europe, had arrived in Copenhagen by air the previous evening. Strict security plans were in force following reports that a group of left wing Japanese militants had flown in to Denmark three weeks before with the intention of attacking the seventy year old Emperor. Two Japanese students were arrested by police outside the airport before his aircraft arrived.

On Tuesday, his car was provided with a heavy escort of police motorcyclists as he and the Empress toured Copenhagen's tourist attractions before their lunch engagement with the King and Queen.

On Wednesday (28 September), the Emperor will fly to Belgium for the second part of his European tour.
