    East Germany which qualified over the weekend (16-17 July) at the top of the points table for the European Cup "Bruno Zauli" track and field games in Greece next month (August) was helped by good performances in the men's pole-vault, 110 metres hurdles, 3,000 metres steeplechase, and 200 metres sprint. On the final day of the qualifying trials at the games stadium in Athens, the Greek capital, they dominated the four events with first or second places in each place as well.

    SYNOPSIS: On Sunday (17 July) Azel Weber of East Germany jumped 5.30 metres in the pole-vault for an easy victory.

    Thomas Munket in the number 116 vest followed his fellow-country-man with a first in the 110-metres hurdles in 13.68 seconds to beat a Finn and an Italian into second and third.

    In the 800 metres, however, East Germany slipped back to third place -- with Josep Plachy of Czechoslovakia, in the number 16 vest, taking the honours for first place. Ever Hoping of the Netherlands, number 309, and East Germany's Olaf Beyer, number 105, struggled hard for second and third. Plachy's final time -- one minute 46.83 seconds, against the Dutchman's one minute 47.33 and Beyer's one-47.57.

    The East Germans came back in the 3,000 metres steeplechase. Ralf Ponitzsch, wearing number 119, scored a first over Italian Franco Fava, number 261, and Dusan Moravcik of Czechoslovakia, number 13. His winning time -- eight minutes 33.13 seconds, with the Italian second only point nought-seven of a second behind in eight 33.20 Moravcik took third in eight 35.06.

    In the 200 metres, East Germany's Detlef Kubeck managed second in 20.68 seconds against a victory by Italy's Pietro Mennea in 20.15. Third was Ossi Karttunen of Finland in 20.80 seconds.
