Background: A NIGERIAN AND A BELGIAN AIRLINES HAVE ARRANGED TO AIRLIFT 2,000 MOSLEM PILGRIMS FROM NIGERIA TO MECCA. THE PILGRIMS JOURNEY TO THEIR HOLY LAND HAD BEEN HELD UP BECAUSE AIRLINE THEY HAD BOOKED ON WERE TOLD THEY HAD NO LANDING RIGHTS IN JEDDA, SAUDI ARABIA.

IT WAS REPORTED THAT THE 2,000 PILGRIMS, INCLUDING NURSING MOTHERS, HAD BEEN STRANDED AT KANO IN NORTHERN NIGERIA BECAUSE OF THE TRANSPORT HITCH. NIGERIAN AIRWAYS AND SABENA AIRLINES HAD BOTH FILLED THEIR QUOTA OF PILGRIMS BUT DECIDED LAST NIGHT (WEDNESDAY) TO COME TO THE PILGRIMS' RESCUE WITH SPECIAL FLIGHTS. SPOKESMAN FOR THE AIRLINES SAID THEY EXPECTED ALL THE PILGRIMS WOULD BE FLOWN OUT BY NEXT SUNDAY NIGHT.

NO REPRESENTATIVE FROM THE SAUDI ARABIAN EMBASSY IN LAGOS WOULD SAY WHICH AIRLINES HAD BEEN REFUSED LANDING RIGHTS IN JEDDA. NIGERIAN AIRWAYS SPOKESMAN SAID THREE OR FOUR AIRLINES WERE INVOLVED BUT IT WAS NOT ONE OF THEM.
