    Alphonse Sweeckx, well-known Belgian rider, was winner on general classification of this year's four-day Tour de Belgique cycling race for professionals. The contest ended in Brussels. May 26.

    The day's racing began with a sprint against the clock over the Huy-Hannut section of the course, won by Sweeckx (no. 10).

    Next came the race over the 178 km. from Hannut to Brussels. The 74 competitors who had survived the first three days' racing kept well together for the first 44 km. from Hannut until they came to the hill at Ans. At that point, the Belgian Van den Brande (no. 47) and the Dutchman, Van den Brekel (no. 57) were prominent. Ten riders climbed the hill ahead of the rest and at Tirlemont, 45 km. further on, they were two minutes ahead of the main group. They gradually increased this lead and as they drew close to Brussels were six minutes ahead of the main body.

    Ten kilometres from Brussels, two riders took the lead - both Belgians - Joseph Schils (no 87) and Arthur De Cabooter (no. 2). As the race ended, at the Palais des Sports in Brussels, Schils secured the lead. On general classification, Alphonse Sweeckx was declared the winner of the 1960 Tour de Belgique as the rider with the most regularly good performance throughout.
