  • Description

Several months ago President Marcos of the Philippines put forward the suggestion that United States forces should withdraw from this airbase in Pampanga Province in the Philippines. But recently thousands of Filipinos flocked to the Clark Airbase to help the United States servicemen there celebrate the American Bicentennial.

The large crowds were treated to a procession led by troops carrying both the United States and Philippines flags. The base is the biggest American military base outside of the United States itself. And, as was befitting such a celebration, included in the procession was a float depicting the famous Mayflower ship which brought the members of the quacker religion to America.

Another special show put on for the celebration was a skydiving act by United States paratroopers. It was intended for the skydivers in paint the figures "76" in the sky with flares.....but unfortunately strong winds upset the intention. As well as the shows there were cold soft drinks and hundreds of gallons of ice cream as well as the inevitable, hot-dog.

As the skydivers landed the crowds attention was drawn to another landing nearby. This time by one of the only non-American produced planes on the base; the British built AV-8 Herrier. The entire day was billed as Philippine-American Friendship day, a title that was taken literally by many of these on the base.

And despite apparent recent deterioration of Philippine and American relations it appeared that the spirit of seventy-six had never bene stronger in the Philippines.
