Background: Mr. Hanri Lopes, Minister of Education for the People's Republic of the Congo, last Saturday (5 June) autographed copies of his newest book at a shop in Brazzaville.

Mr. Lopes has written numerous books and poems and is recognised among the foremost African authors. His latest work, "Tribaliques" is composed of eight short stories relating to the problems of Africa today.

SYNOPSIS: Brazzaville's keenest readers were in a bookshop on the Avenue Foch last week. The occasion was Minister of Education and Culture Mr. Henri Lopes signing his new book "Tribaliques"........a collection of eight short stories based on the problems of Africa today. Many readers took the opportunity to chat with Mr. Lopes, who is recognised among the foremost African authors.

Henri Lopes was born in Kinshasa in 1937. He travelled to France in 1949 to study for an arts degree and later did his post graduate studies in history. From 1957 to 1965 he was a member of the executive committee of the Federation of Students of Black Africa in France. He left France for Brazzaville later in 1965.

Mr. Lopes has continued to write since his return to Africa. His work has so far comprised poems and short stories. He was given the portfolio of Minister of Education in January 1970 and wrote "Tribaliques" while holding his political office; the book has received good reviews.
