  • Description

The 83,000-ton former Transatlantic liner Queen Elizabeth arrived in Hongkong today (Thursday) where she will be converted into a floating university.

It was just after dawn when the famous ship, now renamed Seawise University, nosed slowly through the western approaches into Hongkong harbour.

She was greeted by a fireboat shooting cascades of water, helicopters and pleasure craft. Hongkong newspapers have already dubbed her 'our queen'.

It was the end of a five-month voyage from Florida which was interrupted when the Seawise University's engines broke down in the Caribbean.

After her last crossing of the Atlantic three years ago, the liner was sold to some American businessmen. They later sold her to the Taiwan shipping magnate Mr C.Y. Tung who plans to use her for educational purposes.
