Background: In Washington June 22 Dr.Albert B.Sabin of Cincinnati University said that medical findings had proved his new oral live-virus polio vaccine to be perfectly safe. VISNEWS recently filmed vaccine cultivation at Lederle Laboratories New York, - Dr.Sabin at work in his Cincinnati laboratory-and a woman doctor administering the liquid vaccine to children in New Orleans, Louisiana.
Leading American virologist Dr.Sabin, those research is sponsored by the New York National Foundation, has developed a live-virus vaccine - proved successful in trials with 4 2/1 million people. This type of vaccine gives a more lasting immunity than vaccines utilising dead virus.
Under natural conditions, the polio virus enters the body by way of the mouth, and multiplies in throat and intestines, producing, in the vast majority of people, long lasting immunity without paralysis. To imitate this natural process without incurring the danger of paralysis, one must have modified polio viruses which can still multiply in the intestines but cannot damage the nervous system.
Experimental studies over the past four years have shown that such multiplied viruses can be isolated and given by mouth, producing immunity without symptoms of disease. Oral application by means of a small glass pipette is quick, simple and painless - a great advantage especially in the treatment of children.
