INTRODUCTION: In London, 1972 Munich Olympics Gold Medallist Csava Fenyvesi of Hungary won the 18th Challenge Martini International Epee Fencing competition on Saturday (5 March) from Christian Kauter of Switzerland.

SYNOPSIS: Earlier Fenyvesi, playing with his back to the camera, met 1976 Olympic team silver medallist Jana of West Germany -- facing the camera -- in the semi-finals. Epee fencing has evolved from ancient duelling swordsmanship and hits are scored with the point of the epee only, but the target includes every part of the fencer and his equipment. Bouts are fenced under the conditions of a duel without conventions, with priority between hits being judged entirely on time. Simultaneous hits count against both competitors. In this match Fenyvesi pulled off a convincing win over his opponent, with only four hits registered against him as opposed to ten against Jana.

On to the finals - with Fenyvesi challenging 1976 Olympic team bronze medallist Christian Kauter of Switzerland, who had earlier defeated 1976 Olympic team silver medallic Behr of West Germany in his semi-final. the reigning Martini champion, Alex Pusch of West Germany was knocked out in the second round this year.

Fenyvesi, facing the camera this time, is one of the giants of the sport, having carried off most major world titles and with Pusch so unexpectedly dismissed early in the competition, his confidence on Saturday was virtually unassailable.

But Kauter gave him good measure every second of the way and even as the last moments of the ten-minute bout passed it was anybody's guess as to the final outcome. But Fenyvesi had the edge on his opponent, finally defeating him with seven hits scored against him, as opposed to ten against Kauter. The next round of the Martini club fencing fixtures takes place in Turin, Italy, in a few days time -- the 12th Europe Cup for Women's Foil fencing for National Championship teams.
