  • Description

DELEGATES FROM MORE THAN 60 COUNTRIES HAVE COMPLETED AT A CONFERENCE IN GENEVA, SWITZERLAND, A BROADCASTING PLAN FOR AFRICA. THE PLAN WILL ALLOCATE WAVELENGTHS SO THAT BROADCASTING STATIONS IN AFRICA WILL BE ABLE TO OPERATE FREE FROM INTERFERENCE.

THE CONFERENCE WAS CONVENED THREE WEEKS AGO BY THE INTERNATIONAL TELECOMMUNICATION UNION (I.T.U.) - A UNITED NATIONS SPECIALISED AGENCY - AND WAS UNDER THE CHAIRMANSHIP OF MR. ALPHA DIALLO, FROM GUINEA. ALL BUT SIX COUNTRIES IN AFRICA - SUDAN, LIBYA, RWANDA, SIERRA LEONE, RHODESIA AND SOUTH AFRICA - WERE REPRESENTED AT THE CONFERENCE.

MR. DIALLO SAID TODAY (SATURDAY) THAT BETWEEN 800 AND 1,000 FREQUENCIES HAD BEEN ALLOCATED TO AFRICAN BROADCASTING STATIONS SO THAT THERE WOULD BE NO INTERFERENCE FROM TRANSMITTERS EITHER IN AFRICA OR ABROAD.

MR. DIALLO STRESSED THE IMPORTANCE OF BROADCASTING TO AFRICA AS THE SUREST WAY AVAILABLE OF CONTACTING THE PEOPLE, AND AS AN IMPORTANT INSTRUMENT IN THEIR EDUCATION. HE ESTIMATED THAT TRANSMISSIONS WERE ABLE TO REACH ABOUT 85 PER CENT OF THE POPULATION IN AFRICAN TOWNS.
