    Background: THE THREE U.S. PRISONERS OF THE VIET CONG, WHO WERE RELEASED AT A BATTLEFIELD MEETING ON WEDNESDAY, ARE EXPECTED TO BE FLOWN HOME AFTER MEDICAL EXAMINATIONS AT A UNITED STATES MILITARY HOSPITAL. THE MEN WERE FLOWN TO THE HOSPITAL, AT LONG BINH, 10 MILES (16 KMS) FROM SAIGON, IMMEDIATELY THEY WERE HANDED OVER BY THE VIET CONG TO UNARMED U.S. OFFICERS.

    THE THREE MEN, ALL 21 YEARS OLD, WERE IDENTIFIED AS DONALD SMITH, JAMES BRIGHAM AND THOMAS JONES. THEY WERE HANDED OVER AT A BATTLEFIELD MEETING 51 MILES (82 KMS) NORTHWEST OF SAIGON.

    AN ARMY DOCTOR, WHO EXAMINED THEM,SAID THEY WERE IN "GENERALLY SATISFACTORY TO GOOD" PHYSICAL CONDITION.
