    THE INTER-AMERICAN PEACE COMMITTEE YESTERDAY (THURSDAY) MET PRESIDENT JOHNSON FOR FURTHER MEDIATORY TALKS IN THE UNITED STATES-PANAMA CRISIS. FORMED BY THE ORGANISATION OF AMERICAN STATES, THE COMMITTEE WAS LED BY ITS CHAIRMAN, MR. ENRIQUE TEJERA PARIS, THE VENEZUELAN AMBASSADOR.

    AFTER THE MEETING, REPORTERS ASKED HIM WHAT PROGRESS WAS BEING MADE. THE AMBASSADOR REPLIED:
    (BACKGROUND TO THE PROBLEM IS PANAMA'S DEMAND THAT THE UNITED STATES EXPRESS ITS WILLINGNESS TO RE-NEGOTIATE THE PANAMA CANAL TREATY OF 1903. THE UNITED STATES HAS AGREED TO "DISCUSSIONS" OF ALL MATTERS AFFECTING RELATIONS WITH PANAMA, BUT SO FAR HAS DECLINED TO COMMIT ITSELF TO REVISING THE TREATY. RIOTING TWO WEEKS AGO OVER THE FLYING OF THE PANAMANIAN FLAG IN THE U.S. PANAMA CANAL ZONE WAS REPORTED TO HAVE KILLED 23 PANAMANIANS AND FOUR AMERICANS.)
