  • Description

The United Nations Security Council made an urgent demand for a cessation of shooting between Indian and Pakistani forces Monday night (27 September). It was the fourth such resolution adopted by the Security Council, since hostilities broke out between the two giant Asian countries.

The resolution, which was unanimously adopted, called for both nations to withdraw their forces to positions held on August 5th.

the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, Arthur Goldberg, now functioning as the Council's President, laid the resolution before a quickly summoned session of the Council. Outside of Goldberg there were no speakers. He swiftly declared the resolution adopted. Mr. Goldberg had spent most of that day in private conversations with Council representatives and Security General U Thant.
