  • Description

Italian Ferraris set the fastest times in practice runs on Friday (21 June) for the Dutch Formula One motor racing Grand Prix. The Grand Prix will be held in Zandvoort, Holland, on Sunday (23 June).

The Ferrari driven by Swiss Clay Regazzoni was by far the fastest in practice sessions on Friday. He ended with a time of I minute 18 point 91 seconds, for an average speed of 119 miles an hour (192 kms an hour) round the 2.6 mile (4.2 kms.) seaside track. This was almost one and a half seconds faster than the official lap record. It also beat the record for the old, longer track.

Austrian Niki Lauda was over half a second slower in the second Ferrari, while South African Jody Scheckter -- winner of the Swedish Grand Prix two weeks ago -- slipped into third place a full second down on Regazzoni.

There are 28 cars warming up for Sunday's race in Zandvoort, and the latest official news is that only 26 will start.

SYNOPSIS: Some of the world's best known Formula One drivers were in the pits in Zandvoort, Holland on Friday, preparing for the Dutch Grand Prix. The race will be held on Sunday.

There's some doubt about how many of the twenty eight cars will start on Sunday. Formula One manufacturers have asked that all their drivers be automatically qualified, regardless of times. But on Friday, it seemed only the fastest drivers would get onto the starting grid.

Argentine Carlos Reutemann was one of the first to try the Zandvoort track. In a Brabham Ford, his was the seventh fastest time in this practice. Niki Lauda from Austria took second place in a Ferrari.

South African ???dy Scheckter, in a Tyrrell Ford, flew round the two mile track in a minute and nineteen seconds -- the third fastest time in the practice. But Briton John Watson could not spur his Brabham Ford to great things in this run.

A firm favourite is Swede Ronnie Peterson. His time, the fourth best, was a minute and twenty seconds. His main opposition is bound to be the Ferrari team, especially Swiss Clay Regazzoni, who took the top time in the practice.
