Background: Shipe of the French fleet are arriving in the port of Djibouti in the Territory of the Afars and Issas, on the east coast of Africa. The vessels, part of the Saphir group, are to relieve the present French force in the Indian Ocean and the Red Sea, the Mousson group.
On Friday (15 November) the aircraft-carrier Clemenceau and escort-ship Bouvet docket at the port. They joined the permanently-based Charente, the flag-ship of the French commander in the Indian Ocean, Admiral Schweitzer. In the next few days, the frigate Tourville and two fuel-supply ships, La Saone and the Aber Wrach, will arrive to complets the group. They will take up duty in the Indian Ocean at the end of December.
The arrival of the French vessels comes at a time when President of the neighbouring Republic of Somalia, Muhammad Said Barre, has called for the full independence of the French-Protected Territory.

On Friday, the aircraft-carrier Clemenc??? joined newly-arrived escort-ship, Bouvet, and the flag-shop Charente at the port. They're all part of the Saphir group relieving the present French Force in the area -- the Mousson group.
The 33,000-ton Clemenceau carries a complement of 40 aircraft -- including Crusader interceptors -- and over 2,000
Also on board are transport helicopters of the Super Frelon type...and equipment for various missions at sea.
The Clemenceau also carries attack and reconnaisance aircraft, and anti-submarine 'planes. The aircraft-carrier and escort-ship Bouvet will be joined by the frigate Tourville and two fuel-supply ships in the next few days. At the end of December, the group will take up its duties in the Indian Ocean.
Over 3,000 men will taks part in the naval exercises.
