INTRODUCTION: The French yachting patron, Baron Marcel Bich, has launched yet another contender for the prestigious America's Cup race off Newport, Rhode Island, in the United States in September. The 125-year-old event for 12 metre (38 feet) yachts is one of the most challenging in the ocean-racing calender.

SYNOPSIS: The 'France II' is the third challenger to be built by the French ball-point-pen manufacturer. His first two lost to Australian challengers in elimination series for the 1970 and 1974 finals.

The France II was build and launched at a ship-yard in Marseilles. Baron Bich's efforts have led to a resurgence of interest by his countrymen to compete in international yachting circles. The new vessel's designed was Andre Mauric, who also designed France's other two contenders. The new yacht's first test will be against the Swedish hope called 'Sweden'.

The winner of the French-Swedish clash will face Australia. The winner of that series will challenge the United States, which has held the America's Cup ever since it took it away from Britain in 1851.
