  • Description

THE EXECUTIVE SECRETARY OF THE ECONOMIC COMMISSION FOR AFRICA, MR. ROBERT GARDINER, ON WEDNESDAY (25 FEB.) DELIVERED THE FIRST OF SERIES OF THREE LECTURES AT STATE HOUSE, ACCRA, IN MEMORY OF THE LATE DR. JOSEPH DANQUAH.

DR. DANAQUAH, FORMER LEADER OF GHANA'S (OPPOSITION) UNITED PARTY, DIED AT THE AGE OF 63 IN PRISON IN 1965 AFTER BEING HELD FOR MORE THAN A YEAR WITHOUT TRIAL UNDER THE PREVENTIVE DETENTION ACT. HE CONTESTED THE 1960 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION AGAINST DR. KWAME NKRUMAH AND FLEDGED THE UNITED PARTY TO RESTORE PARLIAMENTARY DEMOCRACY AND RELEASE ALL POLITICAL PRISONERS IF ELECTED. THE CAUSE OF HIS DEATH WAS OFFICIALLY GIVEN AS HEART FAILURE.

IN HIS LECTURE MR. GARDINER EMPHASISED THAT EDUCATED GHANAIANS HAD A CREDITABLE RECORD OF PUBLIC CONCERN AND PUBLIC SERVICE AND THAT KNOWLEDGE AND APPRECIATION OF THIS FACT WOULD BE A SOURCE OF INSPIRATION AND ENCOURAGEMENT TO YOUNG PEOPLE OF TODAY.

MR. GARDINER SAID THAT HIS GENERATION HAD BEEN RESPONSIBLE FOR THE EVENTS THAT HAD LED TO THE SUFFERING AND DEATH OF DR. DANQUAH AND SEVERAL OTHER GHANIANS, AND THAT TO UNDERSTAND DR. DANQUAH ONE SHOULD TRY TO APPRECIATE THE FORCES THAT HAD MOULDED HIM AND STILL DETERMINE THE VALUE OF GHANAIAN SOCIETY.
