    Background: The Sultan of Brunei, sir Hassanal Bolkiah, has celebrated his 26th birthday in a capital adorned with coloured lights and flags. The day was declared a public holiday. Special prayers wore said in the main mosque.

    Armed forces, including Gurkha troops, paraded in the Sultan's honour. The younger ruler took the salute at a march past. Before accession to the throne, he had been studying at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst.

    Later in the throne room of the Royal Palace, the Sultan held an official audience. Gifts were presented from the various communities in Brunei. Sir Hassanal Bolkian come to the throne in 1967 on the abdication of his father; he is married to his first cousin, Princess Anak Saleha, and has two children.
