The man were quiet at the dockside as they said their good-byes to their families. Although the sailors hadn't been officially told where they were going, their destination was said to be a foregone conclusion.

The navy's buildup in the Vietnam area has been increasing steadily recently and it now has a bigger role the war than ever before.

The Ticonderoga, which was the recovery vessel in the Apollo 16 moon mission, had been in San Diego to go into a shipyard. But the ship's orders were changed and it sailed earlier than planed for Vietnam.

This film, from the American National Broadcasting Company, has a reporter's commentary, but we are proving an alternate commentary which editors may use if they wish.

SYNOPSIS: Sailors boarded the aircraft carrier Ticonderoga at the North Island Naval Air Station in San Diego on Wednesday, as the ship prepared to leave for Vietnamese waters. The Ticonderoga, an anti-submarine warfare ship, will be the seventh carrier in the Vietnam area. The mood at the dockside was subdued. Although the men hadn't officially been told where they were going, their ultimate destination was a foregone conclusion.

The navy is now playing its biggest role in Vietnam, and the buildup has cut the size of the West Coast fleet by about half in a year. The Ticonderoga, the Apollo 16 recovery ship, was to enter a shipyard when orders were changed.
