  • Description

A 28th minute goal from Alan Ball gave England a 1-0 victory over Scotland in the British Soccer Championship on Saturday (May 27th) after a match marked by private battles between players, crunching taclklas and instant retaliation.

The result gave England and Scotland four points each in the Championship, with Ireland finishing third and Wales fourth.

After 20 minutes of destructive play in mid-field, Italian referee Sergio Gonella spoke to both captains -- but play remained rough throughout the game.

The crucial goal came when Colin Bell and Martin Chivers combined to set up a chance for Ball, who narrowly squeezed a pass from Chivers wide of goalkeeper Bobby Clark.

England always looked more dangerous, particularly in defence -- where their clam, methodical play enabled them to stamp authority over the opposition. But poor finishing kept England's score down.

Scotland came near to scoring on three occasions, the first in the second minute when John Bronlie, the right back, lifted a speculative centre which almost slipped out of the reach of England goalkeeper Gerdon Banks.
