TRANSCRIPT: SEQ. 1: SADAT: "There has been new elements but unfortunately negative elements from the side of Israel, either in leaks, or in the declarations of Mr Begin. We reject this. For that we did not receive any letter or message and I have given my orders to the military team to return and as you know they returned to Israel. So what I wanted to say was this. There has been new elements ye, but negative elements from Israel."

SEQ. 3: ATHERTON: "I kept this occasion to report to President Sadat on the talks that I gave had so far in this trip to the area, to review for him the American assessment of where the peacemaking process now stands, and to hear from President Sadat his assessment. I also took the occasion to describe for him how we would see the peacemaking process continuing in the future."

Background: The President of the United States, Mr Jimmy Carter, has confirmed that the Secretary of State, Mr Cyrus Vance, plans to visit Egypt and Israel, despite difficulties in organising new direct peace talks between the two middle East countries. Israel's Prime Minister, Mr Begin, has said that Egypt can not get something for nothing, and he seeks comprise on the question of Israel-occupied territories. President Sadat has met United States Special Envoy, Mr Alfred Atherton, and afterwards, when they both met the press, President Sadat made it clear that he does not think Israel's response meets his prerequisite for more direct talks, of 'new elements' to be introduced to the peace negotiations.
