  • Description

Replacement troops from Sudan began arriving in the Lebanese capital of Beirut on Wednesday (1 November) to take up duty with the Arab Deterrent Force.

SYNOPSIS: The Sudanese troops, together with the Saudi Arabian members of the Arab Deterrent Force, have assumed a new significance following the meeting last month of Arab Foreign Ministers at the Lebanese hill town of Beiteddin. The Ministers decided that one way to defuse the explosive situation that had led to outbreaks of fighting between Syrians - who dominate the A.D.F. - and right- wing Christian militias, was to have the Syrians replaced in sensitive areas by Saudis and Sudanese.

The Saudis plan to increase their contribution to the A.D.F. They have not yet announced to what extent the contingent will be enlarged, but say the operation will be completed within three weeks. Before the move, the Saudis had some one thousand, two hundred men in Lebanon. The Sudanese have about nine hundred men seconded to the A.D.F. Welcoming the Sudanese replacements, their Commander n Lebanon, Colonel Sami al-Khatib, was on hand to address the men.

At one stage, President Nimeiry of Sudan threatened to withdraw his contingent because of the Syrian-Christian militia clashes, but later relented. Colonel Khatib told the new men it was a great honour for them to undertake such an important task. He told them about their duty to keep the peace and work for Arab unity. As the Sudanese were arriving there were reports of isolated sniper fire in some suburbs of Beirut.
