  • Description

The Variety Club of Great Britain celebrated its tenth anniversary with a birthday lunch at the Savoy Hotel, London, Nov. 10.

The Duke of Edinburgh and his uncle, Earl Mountbatten of Burma, were present among a host of leading "show business" personalities, and the Duke received three handsome cheques for charity from Mr Billy Butlin, the holiday camp king and currently "Chief Barker" - as the chairman is known - of the Variety Club.

The cheques provided GBP7,000 for the Duke's own Award Scheme for young people, GBP15,000 for the National Playing Fields Association (with which the Duke is also closely connected), and GBP20,000 for the Royal Institute for the Blind, of which the Queen is Patron.

Replying to the "Chief Barker", the Duke said (SOF) that the ways of show business were very strange - usually when people had birthdays they received presents, but here was the Variety Club giving them away instead. The Duke said the three charities would be happy and delighted to have this help from the Club. He would not thank them personally as he himself was getting nothing out of it, but the return in terms of human enjoyment of this investment were immeasurable - it would make a stockbroker fall flat on his face.

The Duke said the Club had succeeded in raising this year for charity GBP100,000 - if they could raise a million pounds, the same would apply: "you raise it and I'll tell you how to spend it". Amid laughter the Duke added that he himself had been an honorary clown for ten year.

Among the personalities filmed at the lunch were comedians Bud Flanagan, Max Bygraves and Norman Wisdom, and water speed ace Donald Campbell.
