  • Description

In West Africa, a new bilateral agreement between Togo and Benin has committed the two countries to working more closely together, and to end border incidents. President Mathieu Kerekou of Benin reached the agreement with Togo's President Gnassigbe Eyadema, during a state visit to the Togo capital, Lome, last week (12 May).

SYNOPSIS: President Eyadema met Benin's President Kerekou at Lome airport. During talks later, the two men agreed on a common scheme to develop the Mono river valley, which forms a natural border between Benin and Togo. Management of the river will mean a large increase in the amount of hydro-electricity available to both nations, and more water for irrigation. The cost has been estimated at ten-thousand-million C.F.A. frances.

President Kerekou expressed the hope that frontier incidents would not be repeated, and said no-one could prevent Benin and Togo from co-operating.
