  • Description

Brazil showed their best form for some time in beating Poland 3-1 at the Morumbi Stadium in Sao Paulo on Sunday (19 June). Slack marking by Polish defenders allowed the crafty and inventive Brazilian forwards to roam freely and mount attack after attack. Poland pulled back a goal in the final minute after the Brazilians faded.

SYNOPSIS: Brazil, in dark shorts, and playing from right to left, were in control from the kick-off before 90,000 fans.

Brazilian forwards thrived in the unexpectedly open spaces they found and were unlucky not to convert one of their many early chances.

In their accustomed way, Brazil developed their moves carefully, switching their attacks to opposing flanks with long crossfield passes. But Poland's last line of defence was marking more tightly than their midfield players, and disturbing their confident opponents. And, while Brazil were constantly buzzing around in the Polish penalty area, they discovered that Poland's goalkeeper, Tomaszewski was a formidable barrier.

All this promising effort for no reward was a keen frustration for one of the world's most fanatical football crowds.

In the 22nd minute, Brazil finally broke through. Tomaszewski parried down a hopeful long shot. But a neat pass across the goalmouth found inside forward Paulo Isadoro, who had brilliantly created space for himself, in a splendid example of the quick marauding that has long been a feature of Brazilian football.

Sixteen minutes later, Reinaldo made it 2-nil with an acutely angled shot in the corner past the clutching goalkeeper left hand. This gave the scoreboard a more accurate reflection of the flow of the game.

In the second half, Brazil still kept attacking the Polish defence. Just on the hour, Cerezo was fouled just inside the penalty area. A penalty for Brazil.

Rivelino's fierce shot into the left hand corner of the net made it 3-nil. This crushed any hopes that Poland might have harboured of retrieving the match, though they scored in the final minute.
