ATHERTON: "I could just say very briefly that I had a good follow-on meeting with the Foreign Minister this morning. As I said yesterday, I have discussed with him some the ideas that I have brought back with me from my talks with the Israelis about how to move the peace process forward, and in particular with regard to a declaration of principles for a comprehensive settlement. This morning the Foreign Minister was kind enough to give me some of the government of Egypt's ideas on a draft declaration, and we will be refreshing on this, to see where we go from here. And that's really as much as I am able to say today."



Referring to the meeting Mr. Atherton had later with President Sadat and Vice-President Mubarak, a United States spokesman said that they had carried out a broad review on the full range of issues the Egyptian President will be discussing with President Carter this weekend. Also in Cairo, Egyptian-Israeli military talks adjourned on Wednesday night with no indication of progress over the problem of Jewish settlements in Sinai.

Background: United States Assistant Secretary of State Alfred Atherton said in the Egyptian capital of Cairo on Wednesday (1 February) that differences still remained between Egypt and Israel on re-starting their stalled peace talks. Mr Atherton was speaking after giving Egyptian Foreign Minister, Ibrahim Kamel, Israel's latest ideas on a declaration of principles for a Middle East peace settlement, the key to resuming talks in Jerusalem. Mr Atherton later went with Mr Kamel to see Egyptian President Anwar Sadat and Vice-President Hosni Mubarak.

SYNOPSIS: The Prime Minister's residence was chosen for the meeting between President Anwar Sadat and Vice President Mubarak. President Sadat is due to leave on Thursday for an eight-nation tour, which will include a meeting with United States President Jimmy Carter. It is understood President Sadat will press for a clear US stand on the Palestinian question and Israeli withdrawal from the occupied Arab territories.

After his talks at the Foreign Ministry with Foreign Minister Kamel, Assistant Secretary of State Atherton spoke to newsmen.
