Background: THOUSANDS OF STUDENTS THROUGHOUT CANADA DEMONSTRATED YESTERDAY AT CROSSING POINTS BETWEEN CANADA AND THE UNITED STATES IN PROTEST AGAINST THURSDAY'S PLANNED U.S. NUCLEAR TEST IN THE ALEUTIAN ISLANDS.

THE CANADIAN GOVERNMENT HAS ALREADY EXPRESSED CONCERN, WITH THE JAPANESE GOVERNMENT AND U.S. MEMBERS OF CONGRESS FROM THE WESTERN STATES, OVER THE POSSIBLE CONSEQUENCES OF THE TEST. IT IS FEARED THAT THE UNDERGROUND EXPLOSION COULD CAUSE MAJOR EARTHQUAKES OR TIDAL WAVES WHICH WOULD WREAK HAVOC ON THE COASTS OF ALASKA, BRITISH COLUMBIA AND HAWAII.

YESTERDAY THE STUDENTS DECIDED TO ADD THEIR VOICE TO THE PROTESTS. ONE OF THE MAIN PROTESTS TOOK PLACE AT NIAGARA FALLS. TWO HUNDRED AND FIFTY STUDENTS MARCHED ACROSS THE RAINBOW BRIDGE TO THE AMERICAN CUSTOMS POST. THEY BROUGHT A LETTER TO PRESIDENT NIXON AND A BATTERED EARTH GLOBE TO SYMBOLISE THE PERIL TO THE WORLD OF NUCLEAR EXPLOSIONS. BOTH ITEMS WERE GIVEN TO A UNITED STATES CUSTOMS SUPERVISOR TO BE FORWARDED TO PRESIDENT NIXON.

THE NIAGARA FALLS PROTEST WAS QUIET AND ORDERLY. BUT AT SARNIA, IN ONTARIO, AN UGLY SCENE DEVELOPED WHEN A WOMAN DRIVING A UNITED STATES CAR PLOUGHED THROUGH A CROWD OF STUDENTS BLOCKING A BORDER CROSSING.

ABOUT TWO THOUSAND STUDENTS HAD MASSED AT THE ONTARIO END OF THE BLUE WATER BRIDGE WHICH CARRIES TRAFFIC ACROSS THE ST. CLAIR RIVER TO PORT HURON, MICHIGAN. ACCORDING TO WITNESSES, THE WOMAN CAME THROUGH CUSTOM'S AND 'SLOWED TO A CRAWL', THEN ACCELERATED AND DROVE INTO THE MASSED STUDENTS. ONE YOUNG MAN WAS DRAGGED, 366 FEET (115.5 METRES) BY THE CAR, SAID WITNESSES. HIS LEG WAS CAUGHT UNDER THE CAR'S LEFT FRONT WHEEL.

ONTARIO PROVINCIAL POLICE, WHO HAD BEEN WATCHING THE DEMONSTRATION, ARRESTED THE WOMAN. HER NAME, AND POSSIBLE CHARGES AGAINST HER, WERE NOT IMMEDIATELY REVEALED.
