  • Description

Tens of thousands of grief stricken Arabs took part in East Jerusalem's biggest-ever procession yesterday (1 October) to mark President Nasser's funeral.

While other processions were held on the West Bank and in Israel itself, the Jerusalem mourners walked peacefully through the Arab sector of the old city to the El-Aqsa mosque, Islam's third holiest shrine. They carried wreaths and flowers and Israeli police stood-by. The Israeli Defence Minister, General Dayan was reported to have watched the procession. Many of the mourners wore black and religious services were held after the walk through the streets.

No incidents were reported in Jerusalem but the Gaza Israeli troops fired shots into the air to control a million throng of weeping and shouting mourners.
