  • Description

A stadium in Seoul, capital of South Korea, was the scene May 19 for a sad aftermath of the April riots- a solemn ceremony in which an estimated 50,000 students commemorated 144 of their colleagues killed exactly one month earlier in the rioting.

A student spokesman made a speech of condolence from the platform, while outside troops stood guard against possible disturbances.

The city is still under martial law, but on this occasion the demonstration took place without incident.

Following the fall of the Syngman Rhee regime, there has been progress with Constitutional and other reforms under Acting President Huh Chung, and new elections are planned.
