    Violent storms have swept South America and caused a Chilean Naval ship, the Janqueo, to crash ashore and break in two.45 members of her crew were lost in the heavy surf and high winds.

    A week of violent storms struck South America, causing high winds and high seas in the Pacific Ocean.The storm also dropped heavy snows in the Andes Mountains in both Chile and Argentina.A deluge flooded many mountain cities and towns in Chile and parts of Argentina.31 persons were killed in one avalanche when snow moved down a steep slope and swept through Polvareda, Argentina.

    The Chilean naval tender, Janqueo, was moving along the coast about 450 miles south of Santiago.Gale force winds and mountainous seas drove the ship across some rocks.The Janqueo broke in two.

    The ship had a full compliment of 78 men on board.The interior minister said 45 of these men were drowned in trying to reach safety on shore.27 crew members 1/2 erched on a nearby rocky atoll and were later rescued from there.

    The Janqueo weigh 1235 tons.Her classification is that of Naval Tneder.
