SYNOPSIS: Gabon's Kinguele Dam--the foundation stone was laid over a year ago and the first stage is scheduled to be completed in October this year. The gigantic power scheme will supply electricity to Gabon's capital city, Libreville.
On Friday, Gabon's President, M. Albert Bongo, arrived by helicopter to inspect progress on the dam. He was accompanied by several cabinet ministers, and the French Ambassador to Gabon, M. Daniel Delaunay. President Bongo watched as site officials explained the working of the scheme with the aid of maps and charts...they outlined the aims of the system.
The official party then inspected the water tunnel...where the diverted water is to be channelled into the turbine housings. The President, who has shown a keen interest in the scheme since its conception a few years ago, met several of the miners and chatted about technical points of the scheme. So far, 520 metres of the tunnel have been completed. The dam is being financed with French funds.
