  • Description

After yet another session on Friday (July 31) in Tel Aviv of the Israeli Cabinet, spokesman Michael Arnon announced the details of the acceptance of the United States peace plan for the Middle East.

Israeli's divided Cabinet met four times before reaching Friday's decision in the face of opposition from the right-wing Gahal Party, led by Minister without Portfolio, Menahem Begin.

The Gahal group opposes the plan because, in asking for acceptance of the Security Council Resolution of November 1967, it implies withdrawal from Arab territory won in the June War.

All of the Cabinet voted for the ceasefire but the six Gahal members refused to agree to the mandate for peace negotiations under the auspices of U.N. envoy Gunnar Jarring, Swedish Ambassador to Moscow.

Mr. Arnon explained to reporters the terms of Israeli's acceptance, and Menahem Begin then explained the Gahal party's objections.
