  • Description

A multi-national crew of thirteen men set sail from Guayaquil in Ecuador on Monday (28 May) in three balsawood rafts in an attempt to sail to Australia.

They aim to prove that South American Indians, using similar craft made of balsawood, were capable of making trans-Pacific voyages long before the European conquest of South America. The expedition is using materials which would have been available to the primitive Huachcavilca Indians. The three dug-out rafts have sails made of jute from the Ecuadorean jungle.

SYNOPSIS: At Guayaquil in Ecuador, final preparations are made to three balsawood rafts before the start of an attempt to cross the Pacific Ocean. A multi-national crew of thirteen men set sail in the dug-out rafts on Monday to try to prove that South American Indians in similar craft were capable of making trans-Pacific voyages long before the European conquest of South America. The expedition is using materials which would have been available to the primitive Huancaviloas Indians. The three balsa rafts are fitted with sails made of jute from the Ecuadorian jungle.

The expedition is designed to back up theories advanced by some historians that Australian aborigines are descended from South American "immigrants". The last-minute preparations at the Guayaquil Yacht Club drew a crowd of well-wishers, cameramen and reporters.

The international crew includes three Americans, three Canadians, a Frenchman, a Mexican, a Chilean, and a Ecuadorian. The expedition leader, the Spanish adventurer Vital Alsar, made a similar solo voyage two years ago.

The first scheduled port of call is the Galapagos Islands, forty-five miles off Ecuador. They then plan to make stops at the Marquesas Islands, Tonga, and New Caledonia before reaching Brisbane in Australia -- a total voyage of eleven-hundred miles.
