  • Description

11 PEOPLE WERE KILLED AND 55 WOUNDED, 18 OF THEM SERIOUSLY, WHEN A POWERFUL BOMB WENT OFF EARLY YESTERDAY (FRIDAY) IN A CROWDED MARKET PLACE IN THE MAHNEH YEHULA QUARTER OF JEWISH JERUSALEM.

ISRAELI MILITARY AUTHORITIES IMPOSED AN INDEFINITE CURFEW LAST NIGHT ON THE EASTERN SECTOR OF JERUSALEM, INHABITED BY ARABS. THIS APPEARED TO BE INTENDED TO AID POLICE HUNTING FOR THE PERPETRATORS OF THE EXPLOSION.

ISRAELI PRIME MINISTER, LEVI ESHKOL, INTERRUPTED A CONVALESCENCE HOLIDAY TO RETURN TO JERUSALEM IMMEDIATELY. HE PROMISED ALL POSSIBLE MEASURES TO BRING THE CULPRITS TO JUSTICE.

SPEAKING IN A RADIO INTERVIEW DURING A VISIT TO THE SCENE OF THE INCIDENT, HE BLAMED ARAB LEADERS FOR WHAT HE CALLED THE "MARKET PLACE MURDERS". HE SAID THAT HAVING LOST THE WAR, ARAB LEADERS WERE NOW RESORTING TO "KILL AND RUN" TACTICS. HE PRAISED THE ISRAELI PEOPLE FOR THEIR RESTRAINT.

(FOLLOWING A SIMILAR INCIDENT LAST AUGUST, IN WHICH 11 PEOPLE WERE WOUNDED, CROWDS OF JEWISH YOUTHS TRIED TO TAKE VENGEANCE BY ATTACKS ON ARABS.)
DEFENCE MINISTER MOSHE DAYAN ALSO VISITED THE MARKET PLACE AND LATER WENT TO SEE WOUNDED IN HOSPITAL.
