  • Description

In Buenos Aires, large crowds gathered on Monday (21 January) for the funeral of the Army Colonel killed when left-wing guerrillas attacked an army base on Sunday.

Colonel Camilo Gay and his wife Hilda were among the five people killed when a strong force of guerrillas attacked the base of the 10 Armoured Cavalry Regiment at Azul, 170 miles (275 kilometres) south-west of Buenos Aires. The attack was apparently an attempt to kidnap senior officers.

Following it, President Juan Peron made a nationwide broadcast in which he promised an all-out campaign against left-wing terrorists in the country. He called for active support from all Argentines, including the Labour movement.

An army communique said that 60-70 guerrillas in fatigue uniforms took part in the attack, which it blamed on the People's Revolutionary Party (ERP), an outlawed Marxist group.

The ERP, the only guerrilla organisation still defiantly active since the Peronists came to power last May, said in its communique that the attack was a failure. But it claimed to have kidnapped Colonel and be holding him in a "People's prison".

According to unofficial reports from Army sources, the guerrillas managed to enter the officers living quarters shortly after they began their attacks. They tried to sieze Colonel Gay but he resisted with his revolver and was killed in a gun battle.

His wife, according to the later Army Communique, was take hostage, and then "barbarously assassinated" with her children looking on.

Two of the querrillas were killed in the seven-hour battle which followed the attack. The other man killed was a conscript soldier on guard duty.
