  • Description

Unemployed people and other poor from several Canadian cities flocked to Ottawa to demonstrate at the beginning of a week given to a federal-provincial conference on welfare. They carried banners calling for more benefits for the poor and the unemployed and for a meeting with the Minister of National Health and Welfare, Mr. John C. Munro.

As the demonstrators marched from the Parliament Buildings in Ottawa to the Canadian National Art Centre, a woman who described herself as the wife of a businessman joined the crowd and began handing out bread from her shopping basket. The demonstrators refused it.
