  • Description

Soviet Premier Khrushchev - accompanied by Defence Minister Marshal Malinovsky, Foreign Minister Gromyko and a party of about 100 - arrived at Orly Airport, Paris, May 14, two days before the start of the Summit conference.

Waving to the crowds, Mr. Khrushchev walked along a red carpet and stopped for a moment as two little girls and a boy - children of Soviet Embassy officials - handed him bunches of red roses. A closed car took the Russian leader to the Soviet Embassy, along a road heavily patrolled by gendarmes. After lunch he drove out for an afternoon's sightseeing tour of Paris and its suburbs.

Speaking to reporters at the airport, Mr. Khrushchev said: "Though all peoples desire the strengthening of peace and a detente in international relations it is common knowledge that, particularly of late, influential quarters who are seeking to revive the cold war and hinder the invigoration of the international atmosphere have noticeably intensified their activities in certain countries." The Russian leader added: "Let us hope that their efforts will yield no success, and that the discussion of such questions as universal and complete disarmament, the elimination of the vestige of World War II, the conclusion of a German peace treaty and East-West relations will yield useful results for the cause of universal peace."
Mr. Khrushchev will meet President de Gaulle, May 15, when the French leader will try to smooth out the pre-Summit difficulties. President de Gaulle is backing Prime Minister Macmillan for the Summit conference to be held in secret, while the Soviet Premier is calling for public meetings.
