  • Description

Italy's 48,000 hospital doctors went on a three day strike (from midnight wednesday) throughout the country to demand immediate action from the government on a new employment contract.

The Country's 1,100 hospitals were able to handle only emergency cases as the doctors walked off their jobs. Health minister Tina Anselmi made a last minute appeal to doctors to remain on their jobs but strike leaders said their call for action had received unanimous support. The Doctors are demanding salary increases, incentive schemes for full time employees and increased government spending in the health sector.

Talks on renewing a 1974 contract have been stalled for more than a year.
