THE RHODESIAN GOVERNMENT IS SHIPPING MORE THAN 200,000 CATTLE FROM DROUGHT AREAS TO BETTER GRAZING LANDS IN THE NORTH-EAST. IN TRANSIT AT SALISBURY, THE CATTLE ARE BEING SPRAYED AND CLIPPED TO GET RID OF DISEASE-CARRYING TICKS.

DROUGHT HAS SPREAD EXTENSIVELY THROUGH THE SOUTH AND WEST OF RHODESIA, AFFECTING TOBACCO AND MAIZE CROPS AS WELL AS CATTLE. IN THE EXTREME SOUTH-EAST THE DROUGHT IS IN ITS FIFTH STRAIGHT YEAR.

THE GOVERNMENT HAS ALREADY MOVED MORA THAN 40,000 CATTLE FROM DROUGHT AREAS TO MASHONALAND AND MANICALAND IN THE NORTH AND EAST. AS RHODESIA RAILWAYS CAN MOVE NO MORE THAN 20,000 HEAD A WEEK, IT PLANS TO BORROW 100 TRUCKS FROM SOUTH AFRICA TO BOOST THE TRANSFER.

ON THEIR WAY NORTH THE CATTLE ARE PUT THROUGH A SPRAY RACE AT SALISBURY AND HAVE EARS AND TAILS CLIPPED TO REMOVE TICKS WHICH CARRY DISEASES. REPORTS SAY DISEASES ARE UNDER CONTROL AMONG THE DROUGHT-HIT CATTLE BUT COULD SPREAD IF THIS TREATMENT IS NOT KEPT UP.
