Background: Ipswich overwhelmed once-mighty Manchester United 4-1 before a record 31,000 home crowd on Saturday (17 February). The result was a fair indication of the Ipswich-dominated encounter. Two other Ipswich goals were disallowed.

The match also confirmed each side's league position -- Ipswich are fourth in the first division and within striking distance of the top, while United are second from the bottom and facing relegation to Division Two.

The Manchester team seemed demoralised when Ipswich scored only two minutes after kick-off, and against superior football they resorted to unorthodox tactics which earned them boos from the crowds and bookings from the referee. Kidd was booked for trying to butt Keeley of Ipswich in a touchline scramble, and Buchan had his name taken for trying to stand in for goalkeeper Stepney by hand-balling a Viljoen header over the bar. He did not even save United a goal -- Viljoen scored anyway from the subsequent penalty.
