    A GIFT FOR KENYA FROM JAPAN -- A 400-YEAR-OLD SUIT OF ARMOUR.IT WAS HANDED OVER IN NAIROBI ON THURSDAY NIGHT BY MR YAMAMOTO, THE JAPANESE CONSUL-GENERAL.MR.ACHIENG ONEKO, THE KENYA MINISTER FOR INFORMATION, BROADCASTING AND TOURISM, RECEIVED IT ON BEHALF OF THE GOVERNMENT.

    THE ARMOUR WAS BROUGHT FROM TOKYO BY SEVEN JAPANESE WHO HAVE BEEN MOUNTAIN-CLIMBING IN KENYA.THEY EXPLAINED THE SUIT WAS A GESTURE OF GOODWILL.THE SUIT IS A RARE FAMILY HEIRLOOM BELONGING TO THE LEADER OF THE MOUNTAINEERS, MR.MATSUMOTO.

    MADE OF LACQUERED METAL AND EMBELLISHED WITH FINELY-EMBROIDERED CLOTH, THE ARMOUR WAS ORIGINALLY WORN BY AN ANCIENT SAMURAI WARRIOR.IT IS THE ONLY ITEM OF ORIENTAL CRAFTSMANSHIP IN THE SORSBIE GALLERY, NAIROBI, WHERE IT WILL BE KEPT ON DISPLAY.GALLERY DIRECTOR MR MITCHELL DESCRIBES IT AS A WORK OF ART.

    ALSO WITH THE SUIT IS A SAMURAI SWORD AND SCABBARD.ON THE SUIT ITSELF IS A GENERAL'S BADGE, A VALUABLE COLLECTOR'S PIECE.
