Background: World heavyweight champion Muhammad Ali was badly shaken on Sunday (23 May) when a stage collapsed during the weigh-in for his title defence against Britain's Richard Dunn in Munich.

The 34 year old champion and a score of officials tumbled more than two yards (metres) onto sharp wooden planking when the stage gave way.

Officials said later Ali was not hurt, though badly shaken and it seemed there was no danger that the big fight would be called off.

The accident happened shortly after Ali had weighed in at 220 pounds (100 kilos).

within five minutes of the stage giving way a dozen police cars, sirens screaming, several ambulances and three fire engines converged on the scene. Several people were taken to hospital with cuts and bruises.

Dunn, the British and European champion, had left the stage before it collapsed. He weighed in at 206.5 pounds (94 kilos).

After Ali freed himself form the wreckage, he calmly walked from the hall waving to his fans. Ten minutes later his entourage was whisked off in a fleet of black limousines.

Ali's manager, Angelo Dundee said the world champion had not been injured. "He's absolutely O.K., no strains, no bruises, there's nothing wrong," he said.
