  • Description

Melbourne artist, John Davis is a member of the Underwater Explorers' Club which has the tradition that each member must use his profession to further the activities of the club. This tradition has led him to specialise in painting underwater seascapes in addition to landscape studies.

For four years now he has been diving, equipped with celluloid board and china graph pencil, to the quiet, secret world of the seabed, where for half an hour or more, he records his fleeting impression of the celluloid board. Later back in his studio his sketches are transferred to the permanency of canvas. Often he returns to the seabed to check on details until the canvas reveals the true shades of green, blue and grey that go to make up the mystic world under the sea. This silent world of moving light and fleeting shadow provides a beauty and inspiration that rivals any conventional landscape.
