  • Description

The fifth European Sand Yacht Championships are currently being held in West Germany. The championships last until the 2nd of September and during that time leading land yachtsmen from all over Europe will be competing for the coveted trophies.

Sand yachting is fast-growing in popularity. Each year the international championships attract greater competition, and the design of the yachts improves. This year competitors have come from Great Britain, Belgium, Denmark, France, Switzerland, Holland, and West Germany.

Interest in the sport of land yachting has been fired recently by the race across the Sahara, but although as a sport it might be said to be still in its infancy, the conception of yachts on land is very old. When Columbus was sailing the Atlantic, ox carts in Europe were often rigged with a simple square sail to help ease the load.

300 years age sand yachts for purely pleasurable purposes were built and sailed. These were vast contraptions compared with today's tiny craft. Now light alloys have replaced the wood hulls that were used up to 50 years ago, and the modern land yachtsman must keep abreast of each technological advance that will make faster sailing.

Land yachting, like conventional yachting, is divided into various classes. Today's racing resulted in a win for Louis de Terschueren of Belgium, the 1964 European champion.
