  • Description

In a series of words and deeds the U.S. government has reaffirmed its policy to maintain its friendship and diplomatic relations with the Republic of China...Taiwan.

Despite the rapprochement with Communist China, the U.S. State Department recently said it reaffirms, "at the highest level", the continuation of its defence treaty with the nationalist government. It dates back to 1954.

    Those were the words.

The deeds, reaffirming the American commitment, include the visit of the U.S.S. Oklahoma, a guided missile cruiser of the Seventh Fleet, to Taiwan's port of Keelung where Vice Admiral James Halloway inspected a Chinese honour guard.

The 16,000 ton warship has served extensively in support of allied troops in Vietnam.

The Oklahoma frequently makes port calls -- such as this one to Taiwan -- as part of her goodwill operations.

The Oklahoma's visit followed one by Major General John Gonge, commander of the U.S. 22nd Air Force
And within recent weeks solid Sino-American relations were apparent in the assignment of two squadrons of Phantom Jets -- 36 planes -- to the Taiwan Defense command. It was the first time the U.S. Air force has based the swift fighter-bombers on that island.

These gestures of friendship and support are particularly welcome to the people and government of the Republic of China at this time... especially Washington's statement that the new relationship it seeks with Peiping will NOT be obtained at the expense of America's friends overseas.
