  • Description

THE WHITE HOUSE, WASHINGTON, WAS THE SCENE ON MONDAY OF AN INCIDENT WHICH HAS STIRRED RESENTMENT FROM COAST TO COAST IN THE UNITED STATES. PRESIDENT JOHNSON HAD GONE TO THE ROSE GARDEN TO GREET A GROUP OF AMERICAN FINANCIAL EXPERTS AND CALLED HIS TWO BEAGLE PUPS WHICH WERE FRISKING ON THE LAWN. HE PLAYED WITH THE DOGS, THEN LIFTED THEM BY THEIR EARS. THEY YELPED.

ASKED WHY HE HAD DONE SO, PRESIDENT JOHNSON REPLIED: "TO MAKE HIM BARK. IT'S GOOD FOR HIM. AND IF YOU'VE EVER FOLLOWED DOGS, YOU LIKE TO HEAR THEM YELP".

A LONG ISLAND BEAGLE BREEDER, MR. CALLAHAN, COMMENTED: "MAYBE IT'S DONE IN TEXAS, BUT I NEVER HEARD OF IT". AN ANIMAL PROTECTION SOCIETY OFFICER IN CHARLESTON SAID IF THE PRESIDENT HAD PICKED UP A BEAGLE BY ITS EARS IN CHARLESTON HE WOULD HAVE RUN HIM IN. A PET SHOP OWNER IN WICHITA CLAIMED IT MUST HAVE BEEN PAINFUL FOR THE DOG AND ADDED: "I'M A FAN OF PRESIDENT JOHNSON'S, BUT I DISAPPROVE OF THIS MORE THAN I DO OF HIS POLITICAL ACTIONS".
