  • Description

SIX PEOPLE WERE REPORTED KILLED AND A HUNDRED INJURED IN RIOTS IN NEW DELHI YESTERDAY (MONDAY) OVER THE FUTURE OF THE PUNJAB STATE.

THE RIOTS BEGAN AFTER THE RULING CONGRESS PARTY HAD DECIDED TO CONCEDE A SIKH DEMAND FOR A PUNJABI-SPEAKING STATE. THE HINDU NATIONALISTS BITTERLY OPPOSE THIS MOVE. THE RIOTING BEGAN WHEN A DEMONSTRATION BY SOME 4,000 HINDUS CLASHED WITH BEARDED SIKHS ARMED WITH SWORDS AND SPEARS. POLICE MOVED IN ARMED WITH STEEL-TIPPED STAVES BUT WHEN THESE PROVED TO BE INEFFECTUAL THE POLICE WITHDREW AND FIRED TEAR GAS SHELLS AT THE RIOTERS. HINDUS, WHO OVERTURNED A SIKH JEEP AND THEN BEGAN STONING THE SIKH GURUDWARA (TEMPLE) WERE REPELLED BY THE SIKH WARRIORS.

HINDI IS THE OFFICIAL LANGUAGE OF INDIA BUT IN THE PUNJAB STATE THE POPULATION IS PREDOMINATELY SIKHS WHOSE NATIVE LANGUAGE IS PUNJABI. THE SIKH MAJORITY, LEAD BY SANT FATEH SINGH, APPROVES THE PROPOSED CREATION OF A PUNJABI-SPEAKING STATE WHICH THE SIKHS WOULD DOMINATE POLITICALLY. THE HINDUS IN THE PUNJAB CLAIM THAT IF THE STATE COMES INTO BEING THEIR INTERESTS WOULD BE NEGLECTED. A THIRD GROUP OF BREAKAWAY EXTREMIST SIKHS, LED BY MASTER TRA SINGH, DEMAND THE SIKH STATE BUT CLAIM THAT THE GOVERNMENT PLANS DOES NOT GO FAR ENOUGH.
