  • Description

The three-man Presidential commission which came to power in Dahomey early in May, has paid a one-day flying visit to the Nigerian government in Lagos.

Major-General Yakubu Gowon, Nigeria's Head of State was at Ikeja airport to welcome the Commission, led by President Hubert Maga, who shares the civil power in Dahomey with M. Justin Ahomadegbe and M. Soruu Migan Apithy. The presidency of the Dahomey ruling council rotates every two years.

Relations between neighbouring Nigeria and Dahomey became strained last year when Dahomey allowed the main airport at Cotonou to be used as a base for relief flights into the former territory of Biafra.

The Dahomey presidential Commission has been making a number of friendly visits to neighbouring African states since it came to power after a period of rule by the country's Military Directorate. This one brought a large delegation, including the Finance, Economic and Foreign Ministers.

Dahomey will shortly re-open its embassy in Lagos. It was closed two years for austerity reasons.

In a luncheon speech after a 90-minute talk between the two leaders, General Gowon said he hoped the visit would mark the beginning of a period of fruitful co-operation between the two countries.

In reply, President Maga added that Dahomey would stand firm in the pursuit of unity on the African continent, and co-operate with Nigeria to bring about this goal.
